Section 10: Environmental Qualification (DO-160)

Definition

A rapid transfer of electrostatic charge between bodies at different electrical potentials, caused by direct contact or a strong electrostatic field. In the aircraft context, ESD events can be generated by flight crew or maintenance personnel interacting with equipment and can cause upset, latch-up, or permanent damage to electronic circuits. DO-160 Section 25 defines ESD test methods and severity levels for airborne equipment.

Where This Shows Up

ESD testing simulates the discharge event that occurs when a charged person touches the equipment. The test uses an ESD simulator (ESD gun) that delivers a specified voltage discharge (typically 2 kV to 15 kV depending on the category) to accessible surfaces, controls, and connectors of the equipment. The equipment must withstand ESD events without permanent damage and, depending on the equipment criticality, without functional upset. ESD protection is implemented through design practices including conductive enclosures, ESD protection devices (TVS diodes) on exposed circuit nodes, and proper grounding of accessible metallic surfaces.
