Vibration Testing

Section 10: Environmental Qualification (DO-160)

Definition

DO-160 Section 8 defines vibration tests that subject equipment to sinusoidal or random vibration profiles representative of the vibration environment at the equipment's installation location on the aircraft. Test profiles vary by aircraft type (fixed-wing jet, propeller, helicopter) and installation location (instrument panel, rack-mounted, engine-mounted, etc.).

Where This Shows Up

Vibration testing ensures that equipment maintains structural integrity and functional performance when subjected to the mechanical vibration environment of the aircraft. The vibration spectrum, amplitude, and duration are defined by the applicable category. Fixed-wing jet aircraft typically have random vibration profiles, while propeller aircraft include sinusoidal components at blade-pass frequencies. Helicopter installations are among the most severe due to rotor-induced vibration. Testing may be performed on each axis (vertical, lateral, longitudinal) separately or using multi-axis excitation.
