Fluids Susceptibility Testing
Section 10: Environmental Qualification (DO-160)
Definition
DO-160 Section 11 (Fluids Susceptibility) defines tests that evaluate the equipment's resistance to degradation when exposed to operational fluids commonly encountered in the aircraft environment, including hydraulic fluid, jet fuel, lubricating oil, de-icing fluid, cleaning agents, and other fluids applicable to the installation.
Where This Shows Up
Fluids susceptibility testing assesses both the immediate functional impact and the long-term material degradation caused by fluid exposure. Equipment enclosures, seals, gaskets, and external surfaces are evaluated for swelling, cracking, dissolution, or other material degradation after fluid contact. The applicable fluids and exposure duration are determined by the installation location and the fluids likely to be present. This testing is especially relevant for equipment installed in engine nacelles, wheel wells, and areas accessible during maintenance.
