Waterproofness Testing

Section 10: Environmental Qualification (DO-160)

Definition

DO-160 Section 10 (Waterproofness) defines tests that evaluate the equipment's resistance to water ingress. Test methods include water spray, water drip, condensation, and immersion, depending on the applicable category and the equipment's installation exposure to moisture.

Where This Shows Up

Waterproofness testing is critical for equipment installed in locations exposed to rain, condensation, or operational fluids. The applicable category is determined by the degree of exposure: equipment in a pressurized, climate-controlled cabin may require only condensation resistance, while externally mounted equipment may require full water spray or immersion resistance. Testing verifies that water ingress does not cause functional degradation, electrical shorting, or corrosion-initiating conditions.
