Sand and Dust Testing

Section 10: Environmental Qualification (DO-160)

Definition

DO-160 Section 12 (Sand and Dust) defines tests that evaluate the equipment's resistance to the ingress and abrasive effects of fine sand and dust particles. Testing verifies that the equipment maintains its function and that moving parts, seals, and filters are not adversely affected by particle exposure.

Where This Shows Up

Sand and dust testing is primarily applicable to equipment installed in locations exposed to the external environment or in unpressurized compartments, particularly for aircraft operating in desert or arid environments. The test uses standardized particle sizes and concentrations, with the equipment subjected to particle-laden airflow for specified durations. Acceptance criteria include continued functional performance and no evidence of particle ingress past protective seals.
