Fungus Resistance Testing
Section 10: Environmental Qualification (DO-160)
Definition
DO-160 Section 13 (Fungus Resistance) defines tests that evaluate whether the materials and components of the equipment support fungal growth that could degrade performance or safety. Equipment is exposed to fungal spore cultures under conditions favorable to growth (high humidity and temperature) and evaluated for evidence of fungal colonization.
Where This Shows Up
Fungus testing is applicable when equipment contains organic materials (natural fibers, certain plastics, adhesives, or coatings) that may serve as nutrients for fungal growth, particularly for equipment intended for tropical or humid operating environments. Fungal growth can cause electrical leakage paths, optical surface degradation, corrosion acceleration, and material deterioration. Equipment constructed entirely of non-nutrient materials may qualify for exemption with appropriate material analysis documentation.
