Simple Hardware
Section 09: Hardware Certification (DO-254)
Definition
Airborne electronic hardware whose function can be fully verified through deterministic testing alone, without requiring the full DO-254 design assurance process. Simple hardware items have limited functionality and their correct behavior can be assured through comprehensive testing of all operational conditions.
Where This Shows Up
The distinction between simple and complex hardware is critical because it determines whether the full DO-254 lifecycle process applies. Simple hardware is typically limited to basic analog circuits, passive component assemblies, or other items where exhaustive testing can demonstrate correct operation under all foreseeable conditions. The classification must be justified and agreed upon with the certification authority.

Section 1.6 and Appendix B — provides criteria for distinguishing simple from complex hardware and the reduced assurance activities applicable to simple items.
