Shock Testing
Section 10: Environmental Qualification (DO-160)
Definition
DO-160 Section 7 (Operational Shocks and Crash Safety) defines tests that subject equipment to mechanical shock pulses representative of operational events (e.g., hard landings, turbulence) and, where applicable, crash safety conditions. Operational shock tests verify continued function after shock; crash safety tests verify that equipment does not detach or become a hazard to occupants during a survivable crash.
Where This Shows Up
Operational shock testing uses half-sine or sawtooth pulse profiles at specified amplitudes and durations. Crash safety testing applies significantly higher shock levels to verify the structural integrity of the equipment and its mounting provisions. Crash safety requirements are particularly important for equipment installed in or near the occupied cabin or cockpit. The applicable shock categories depend on the installation location and the aircraft certification basis.
