Application-Specific Integrated Circuit
ASICSection 09: Hardware Certification (DO-254)
Definition
An integrated circuit designed and manufactured for a specific application, with the logic function permanently defined during the fabrication process. Unlike FPGAs, ASICs cannot be reprogrammed after manufacture. ASICs include full-custom designs, standard-cell designs, and gate-array-based implementations.
Where This Shows Up
ASICs in avionics undergo DO-254 design assurance similar to FPGAs, but with additional considerations around fabrication, post-silicon verification, and the inability to correct design errors without a new fabrication run. The high non-recurring engineering cost and long lead times of ASICs make thorough pre-silicon verification especially critical. COTS ASICs (e.g., commercial processor or interface chips) used in avionics may be addressed through COTS component assessment processes rather than the full DO-254 lifecycle.
